Changing your name
At what age can I change my name?
If you are 16 or over, you can change your name via deed poll. A deed poll is a legal document that proves a change of name. You can change any part of your name, add or remove names or hyphens, or alter the spelling.
If you are under 16, the consent of all those with parental responsibility is required to change your name. If someone with parental responsibility doesn’t agree, but another person with parental responsibility does, the person who wants to change your name can apply to the court for permission. If the case goes to court, you may have a chance to explain your wishes and feelings about changing your name.
Can’t I just start using a new name without a formal process?
In theory, you can change your name just by starting to use a new one. This is called a name change by usage. It’s fine with your family and friends, but the main problem is that many organisations, exam boards, and others will only accept a name change if you’ve gone through the official deed poll process.
